Hawaii: The Aloha State

Approximately 5 million people visit the Hawaiian island of Oahu each year, many of them headed to the island’s south shore in the heart of Honolulu for the stretch of manicured white sand beach known as Waikiki. With its clear views of the Diamond Head volcanic tuff and calm yet surf-friendly waters, the area is arguably the Aloha State’s most famous destination. While not a budget destination, there are plenty of budget options for people to choose from once you leave those resorts on Waikiki beach. To help you make the most of your island retreat, I have crafted my four-day itinerary packed with fun, sun and adventure that is sure to fill you with plenty of what Hawaiians call Aloha ʻĀina — “love of the land.”

I stayed at 4.5 star Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. My first day was spent on the tanning on the beach, swimming and exploring the beauty of Waikiki beach strip. It was extremely relaxing and tranquil, spending morning until sunset on the beach. Our first night was definitely my favourite – we had dinner at the Moana Surfrider. whilst watching the incredibly talented Jeremy Cheng sing during the course of our meal and drinks (look him up: Jeremychengmusic.com!) It was such an experience; pleasant food, perfect entertainment, amazing view and scent of the ocean and great service.

Day two we had breakfast the Island Cafe, then spent some time on the water. We had the chance to rent stand up paddle boards for the day for just $25 each, where we used to swim the coast of Waikiki beach. Later that day we went zip lining, which was such a fun experience! We had cocktails at the Duke, where we watched the sun set, something that is impossible to get sick of viewing.

On our third day we woke up before dawn for a swim in the blissfully cool ocean, which was well worth the early wake, and followed it with breakfast at Bill’s Café, which I believe served the best coffee in Hawaii. Day three was also our shopping day, where we made pit stops to catch all the best deals Hawaii offers at Waikiki outlets and Moana Shopping Centre. Our day ended with happy hour drinks at the Embassy Hotel, and dinner at the Royal Hawaiian. The great thing about Waikiki was the ease of walking across to different hotels, beaches and shops for a variety of food, activities and different experiences.

My final day spent in Hawaii was another experience of beauty sights and fun-packed activities. A short drive to Hanauma Bay, took us to a prime snorkeling destination. Here we were provided with shuttle bus service, professional snorkeling equipment and a friendly instruction discussion for just $25. Below is the most surreal beach which we spent hours snorkeling in.
